Skinny Girl Franchise Founder Bethenny Frankel Advises Black Women to Hire White Males As The Face Of Their Companies
By Victor Ochieng
Without an iota of doubt, Bethenny Frankel’s Skinny Girl franchise has performed pretty well. As is expected, those in her position are always called upon to share their ideas with aspiring entrepreneurs as a way to encourage them and provide them with direction on how to make it in entrepreneurship.
However, when Frankel opened her mouth to issue an advice, it only served to disempowered American women, especially those of the African descent.
Mary Pyor, a social strategist audience engagement and tech advisor, said that during a Rent The Runway’s and USB’s Project Entrepreneur event, Frankel made comments that implied that women should sleep with men in exchange for business capital. She didn’t end it there though. Pyor notes, “I was offended when she expressed some kind of kinship with black women because she’s ‘loud.’ And I was taken aback when she advised those of us in the room to get business advice to hire a white man as the face of our companies.”
Although there were no recorded accounts of Frankel’s comments, several other people who attended the event have confirmed her sentiment.
Why would someone of Frankel’s caliber say something like that? Did she sleep with men for capital? Did she hire white men as the face of her company?
And on the issue of race, one would beg to ask whether opting to hire a white man as the face of a company addresses the issue of diversity in business. At the same time, doing so wouldn’t solve the underlying problems that make it a challenge for Black women to secure funds for their businesses.
Pyor wrote a series of tweets in which she outlined some of the things she didn’t like about Frankel’s comments during the event.
“Thank you for standing up and speaking your mind. The fact that you felt shut down is completely contrary to the goals of the weekend. We apologize to you and our guests. We believe that every founder is enough on her own. We disagree with any sentiments to the contrary. There is so much that goes unsaid in this movement and we want to encourage the conversation around this topic. Thank you for your work with @digitalundivided and your advocacy on behalf of those who have not had a voice for so long,” Project Entrepreneur responded to Pyor’s tweet.
On her end, Frankel responded, saying, “I don’t care if ur woman, man, black, white, Hispanic, green or purple. In biz & life be better than everyone else. Don’t complain. Don’t explain.”
