Chuck D drops new video for "Free Big Willie"
December 28th, 2016
It's already been twenty years since Chuck D released his debut solo album, the Autobiography of MistaChuck. Chuck is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the album's debut by releasing a new video for "Free Big Willie," a track off of the album.
"Entertaining is today's way of picking cotton, so that the younger G’s and B’s think all we can be is a big dreamer," Chuck spits on the track, which despite being written at a time when Bill Clinton was still in the White House and most people were still connecting to the internet through a phone line, still manages to address issues and problems that society still struggles with today. "There once was a time we fought the power with a rhyme," Chuck reminisces. "Now the attitude goin' round, no use tryin'."
The Autobiography of MistaChuck was released to critical acclaim in late 1996. While this was Chuck D's first solo album, he maintained Public Enemy's reputation for socially conscious hip hop with tracks that took on a variety of social ills, including the irresponsibility of the media, the subversion of protest and progress via blind consumerism, and more. "Even those who are not fans of Public Enemy per se but of good intelligent hip-hop in general which is paired with high quality beats can't afford to pass up this wrongly slept on album," RapReviews said in their review of the album. "Mistachuck got some things to say; the nation would be well-advised to listen."
