Riots erupted last week after the ANC chose to swap the incumbent for a newcomer to run in the Aug. 3 vote. Many see a wide gap between party leaders and the public that could influence national elections.
PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA — As Thoko Didiza waved and smiled through a downtown pedestrian mall in South Africa’s capital Friday morning, she could have been a politician almost anywhere in the world. She shook hands and cooed at babies, handed out flyers and posed for selfies.
But behind Ms. Didiza’s chipper whistle-stop tour was a week of ash and broken glass. Only hours after the ruling African National Congress party announced her candidacy for mayor of South Africa’s capital the previous Monday, riots had erupted. Over the next four days, five people died and hundreds of buildings and buses were reduced to burned-out husks across the city.
Demonstrators said they had never been properly consulted on the party’s choice to swap the incumbent, Kgosientso Ramokgopa, for Didiza, a newcomer to city politics, in the upcoming Aug. 3 local elections. Their protests had a stark message: We didn’t ask for this candidate and we don’t want her.
For the past two decades, South Africans have largely accepted that democracy often plays out this way – in the backroom negotiations and party conferences where party candidate lists are drawn, torn up, and reshuffled, rather than on election day itself. And the ANC has long celebrated itself as a “big tent” movement, ideologically roomy and rowdy with internal disagreement and dissent. Even if the party has won every national election since 1994, many here have reasoned, its internal democracy is enough to keep its power in check.
But the protests in Pretoria – among others that have rocked the country in recent months – suggest many believe that is no longer the case. A generation after the end of apartheid, South Africa is preparing for local government elections in which, for the first time, the ANC could lose several major municipalities – including Pretoria and Johannesburg, the country's economic heartland . That, in turn, could set up the party, a century-old liberation movement that has ruled South Africa since the advent of democracy, to face its first potential major national losses in the 2019 general elections here.
“There’s a major disconnect between the ANC at leadership level and the ANC of ordinary members,” says Aubrey Matshiqi, a political commentator and research fellow at the Helen Suzman Foundation, a Johannesburg-based think tank. “We shouldn’t be asking ourselves ‘why now’ but instead, ‘why not?’ The party has been building to this for years.”
The riots began Monday evening, shortly after the announcement of Didiza’s candidacy. That night, ANC members torched 19 buses in the township of Mamelodi, which the party quickly decried as apolitical hooliganism (“70 percent thuggery, maybe 30 percent unhappiness,” declared ANC Secretary-General Gwede Mantashe. But by the following day, the protests were spiraling outward, engulfing several of the city’s townships – the historically black neighborhoods on Pretoria’s peripheries that, a generation after the end of apartheid, remain economically malnourished and underdeveloped.
Like many demonstrations in this deeply fractured country, the rioting seemed to be at once about everything and nothing at all. Protesters decried their lack of say in the mayoral race, but also slammed the party for corruption, cronyism, and poor service delivery – roads, schools, electricity – in the areas where they lived. Some demonstrators targeted foreign-owned shops, claiming they were enraged that little had been done to provide economic opportunity to South Africans before foreigners. And still others lobbed sexist insults at the new mayoral candidate, claiming she was too weak to govern.
But behind these tangled political motives was something more elemental – a violent anger at the state of South African society.
“People took to the streets because they felt there was no other way to express their discontent,” says Karen Heese, an economist with Municipal IQ, which tracks protests across South Africa. “That’s one of the main drivers of protests in South Africa in general.”
More broadly, she notes, protest is a mainstay of how South Africans express concern over problems with their infrastructure, schools, public safety, and other governance concerns. In the first four months of 2016, Municipal IQ calculated there was at least one protest against a municipality every other day in South Africa. (Geese says; I could sit and dissect all of this, but I am going back to bed. I have 6 hours of walking ahead of me as the inspections continue, however. I already foreshadowed all of this specifically to you Stacey and nothing is or will change the end result. In the end, Black South Africans will be forced to have to admit that their so-called freedom was always a sham and a ploy put together by Whites both internally and externally and the ANC sold out in order to GET THEIR HANDS ON POWER, without ACCEPTING THE FACT THAT THEY WEREN'T GETTING THEIR HANDS ON POWER AT ALL! They were simply being propped up to fuckin FAILfrom day-1! While being dumb-enough to believe they could outwit Whites and their slaves who handed them a rigged deck of cards in the first place!)
Ironically, however, many of those who protest violently against the ANC also end up voting for it come election day, Mr. Matshiqi notes.
“What we will most probably see in this election is that communities that have come out in protest will still give the ANC a high approval rating and people will be confused, but you must remember that sometimes a vote for the ANC is actually a vote against the opposition,” he says. “Many, many people in this country feel there is simply no credible opposition to the ANC.”
Pabalelo Maisela isn’t sure if that’s true. The 23-year-old Pretoria resident is among South Africa’s so-called “born frees” – the first generation born and raised after the end of racial segregation. She says that although her parents’ and grandparents’ generation have a lifelong loyalty to the ANC – “because they took care of us” – she is more skeptical. In the last election she voted for the Economic Freedom Fighters, an upstart party with a message of economic redistribution and upliftment.
“Why couldn’t the ANC stop this violence? (I'll answer that one, because then who will vote for them, dummy. And this person was dumb to ask this question strictly because the ANC power structure is NOT TEACHING BLACK SOUTH AFRICANS ANYTHING THEY HONESTLY MUST KNOW TO GET OUT OF THIS MESS THAT WHITES AND THEIR SLAVES PUT THEM IN AND WISH AND WANT TO KEEPTHEMIN! And this is what happens when We as Black People have to deal with coming from up underneath White Enslavement, Manipulation, DEPRIVATION AND A LACK OF POLITICAL AND CRITICAL THINKING-SKILLS EXPERIENCE! -_- Still don't get it? Lemme explain it the easiest way possible. In a political, economic and military battle of wits, wills and actual ability, who wins when it is a fully grown adult versus A BABY? I rest My Case. A baby stands ZERO CHANCE! Not some, NO, ZERO CHANCE! And when you FAIL to be REALISTIC AND HONEST about how things like White Oppression and the fact that no matter WHERE YOU LOOK, Black People all over the globe HAD OUR GROWTH INTENTIONALLY DESTROYED AND STUNTED BY WHITES! While they then harvested US and CONTINUED TO GROW AND LEARN AND MATURE FOR THEMSELVES, BY THEMSELVES, AT OUR EXPENSE! EVERYWHERE! Then repeatedly they have used the same tactic and strategy of simply GOING COLD TURKEY AND DROPPING EVERYTHING IN OUR LAPS ANYTIME THEY BELIEVE THAT WE MIGHT BE ABLE TO PUSH THEM OUT IN A BENEFICIALLY CONTROLLED PROCESS FOR OURSELVES. Dear black people (and anyone else who's listening),
I wanted to first say hello and wish you a happy Monday. Secondly, I wanted to bring your attention to what was arguably the greatest speech ever given during the BET Awards.
Now, I've been critical of BET in the past, and much of that hasn't changed. However, I must give credit where it is due. Actor Jesse Williams' speech after receiving the Humanitarian Award really hit the mark in terms of addressing white supremacy in America, and what we need to do in order to grow past the social engineering that has crippled us as a people.
During the speech, Williams spoke on cultural appropriation (when black ideas and culture are stolen to the benefit of other communities), the illusion of whiteness, police brutality, and even black people who give all of their money away to white corporations in order to feel better about themselves.
I listened to his speech wondering how BET executives might feel while listening to one of their speakers challenge the authority of the white-run corporations who sponsor their events, as well as the whites who control Viacom, their parent company. Let's not forget that BET markets their brand to black people, but they are not owned by black people.
The speech was epic and is a reminder to be optimistic about the future of our people, as even those stuck in the matrix of racist Hollywood are starting to awaken to their true destiny. Of course we have a long way to go, but as the years go by, we are moving forward at warp speed.

This particular anime is one that I know all Black boys, teenagers and men, should watch AT LEAST ONCE! So that they understand what happens when you decide to follow behind fools and let them tell you silly-shit where they themselves refuse to put their asses on the line. But damn sure do OFFER UP YOU AND YOURS AT EVERY GIVEN OPPORTUNITY! While hiding like cowards safely away from the battlefields that they love to send Us off to, usually unprepared and stuck underneath idiots and assholes who are nothing but toadying-cronies with no real aptitude to lead in the very wars that they keep claiming they know how to fight and win.
Part of the reason why We as Black People are struggling so much is because many of Our Best and Brightest have been intentionally murdered by Whites and other Non-Black Races in an attempt to keep the status quo where it is and to keep us firmly on the bottom where everyone else is able to easily feast off of us in every way imaginable. For some of you reading this you will simply see it as supposition and so much bullshit and to you I say nothing. Because you are not my intended reading audience anyway and it is a fatal flaw that too many Black Leaders waste time with today and yesterday. Trying to speak words of appeasement to those who have us in peril. It is a waste of time. And it is part of the reason why the Black Pastors and Con-Artists and Nigger-Traitors have become so much more than they ever should have been. Because these elements and aspects seek a comfortable place within the status quo while sometimes vehemently pretending like they don't.
Under normal circumstances a Black Civil War would have already been waged and these dirtbags and low-life's would have been eradicated decades ago if not for the continued support in particular of Whites and White-Jews who give the likes of Boko Haram weapons while running propaganda talking about Bring Our Girls Back, as they then deny Nigeria's request for weapons and munitions to be able to definitively destroy this White-backed CIA force known as Boko Haram. The same White-Jews employ the Charles Barkley's of the world who has had the audacity to say on national Nazi-American TV "Slavery wasn't that bad."
The reality is that the moment he uttered those words Barkley should have been fired. He was not. And why? Because it is as I have typed before and now more and more Black People are painfully having to see for themselves. When you do not own anything, then you don't have power. End of discussion. Barkley works for White-Jews and Whites, not Black anybody. Thus he is protected from direct financial and job punishment because no one Black is his employer. No one Black is his endorser. No one Black is his manager. His accountant. Nothing, nowhere, nobody, Black. Anywhere.
And I shouldn't need to type that. In Legend of the Galactic Heroes you have one side where two people realized that to GAIN POWER they had to GO TO WHERE THE POWER WAS, the military. And then FIND LIKE-MINDED PEOPLE TO JOIN THEM, and then KILL ALL OF THE ASSHOLES WHO'D BEEN FUCKING AROUND AND DRAGGING OUT AND DRAGGING ON A WAR THAT SHOULD HAVE ENDED LITERALLY A CENTURY PRIOR!
On the opposing side, this anime shows the STARK CONTRAST where the One Lone figure who has every fuckin opportunity under the goddamn sun to LITERALLY save his homeland. But unlike the two on the opposing side, he believes more in the ideals of what his country was supposed to represent and time-after-time he makes one excuse after another and is constantly saddled with the slop and shit that his shitty-ass "leaders" with their political agendas and opportunism and doing everything except for taking shit seriously that their country, their way of fuckin life, their fuckin freedom and ability, RIGHT TO EXIST! IS ON THE GODDAMN LINE!
But instead these assholes only care about themselves and clinging to their own silly-ass notion that their country will never come to an end BECAUSE OF THEIR OWN FUCKIN INCOMPETENCE AND STUPIDITY! And that is why this anime is CRITICAL for Black boys, teenagers and MEN TO SEE. Because just the compare contrast shows that when someone believes in following IDEALS THAT DON'T ACTUALLY EXIST WITHIN THE PLACE THAT THEY LIVE AND BREATHE AND FIGHT FOR!?
Then you'll eventually become what you always were if you CONTINUE TO BE SUCCESSFUL DESPITE THE INCOMPETENCE OF THE EXISTING STATUS QUO OF POWER STRUCTURE.
You become a threat.
And it isn't the EXTERNAL THREAT that fools like those who BELIEVE IN their own CORRUPT STATUS QUO, it isn't the ACTUAL EXTERNAL THREAT THAT CAN KILL AND DESTROY THEM THAT THEY WORRY ABOUT, no. It is the INTERNAL THREAT that YOUR COMPETENCE REPRESENTS, that they KNOW IS A THREAT TO THEIR POWER. And when YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND THAT, and you keep spouting IDEALISM WITH NO REALISM? Then you end up like Martin Luther King, you end up like Gary Webb, you end up like Pat Tillman, you end up Malcolm X and yes I said Malcolm X.
When he left the Nation of Islam, he didn't understand the REAL EXTENT OF HIS THREAT TO THEIR POWER. Nor did he understand the threat that Elijah Muhammad was to him and Louis Farrakhan. And while some of you may think Farrakhan is this "great man", all I see is a petty. Jealous, student. Who was desperate to surpass HIS MASTER AND MENTOR, and was more than willing to murder him. And make no mistake about it, the Whites KNEW ABOUT IT. Found out about it. And then CALMLY DID NOTHING. Because they themselves NEEDED MASTER MALCOLM ELIMINATED and why?
Because HIS ORGANIZATION that he'd JUST STARTED. Was going to become just as much of a threat as Master Marcus Garvey's UNIA was. And Malcolm finally understood the power of politics and he'd always pushed and preached about Black Empowerment and SELF-RELIANCE.
