What Happened to South African Democracy
LONDON — Most first-time visitors to Cape Town are mesmerized by the majesty of Table Mountain, and wowed by the vivacity of the Victorian-era waterfront. As a new visitor myself last month, I was captivated by both. But what has lodged most in my memory is something very different.
Driving from the international airport, I was struck by the sheer wretchedness of Cape Flats: the series of black townships, comprising mostly shacks with corrugated steel roofs, that stretch from the highway almost to the horizon. Few people — tourists or locals — want to talk about the Cape Flats. But there is no better starting point for a discussion of the state of contemporary South Africa. (So now? White-Slave. What do YOU SUGGEST BE DONE? Hmmm? Meanwhile, wait for it, wait for it.... Didn't that region look that way underneath Nelson Mandela, too? OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

I was shocked by the degree to which the predominant emotions, 21 years after the end of apartheid, are not of hope and expectation, but of fear and despair. (Ah yes, everything should be cleaned up in 21-years. This would be true if the Blacks of South Africa, were more like me. It would be cleaned up then. But I don't think a lot of Non-Blacks would be happy. The racial disparity and destruction heaped on Black South Africans took place for FAR MORE THAN 21-YEARS AND WAS DONE IN A MANNER WHERE CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY CHARGES SHOULD HAVE BEEN BROUGHT DOWN ON ALL AND ANY INVOLVED WITH THE WHITE-APARTHEID GOVERNMENT! For much of the black population, fear and despair arise out of the sense that while South Africa became a democratic nation after apartheid, in many ways very little has changed.
Khayelitsha, the largest township in the Cape Flats, was established in 1983 by the apartheid government to house about 200,000 black workers. (Oh really? To HOUSE, Black Workers, huh?) According to the 2011 census, almost double that number now live there. More than half live in “informal housing” — shacks, in other words. (Again? It is not a secret that Whites still have the lionshare of wealth, resources and power in South Africa. Seizing their wealth and resources and then converting it to Black-benefit will cause an uproar among the White OUTSIDE of South Africa. It's funny that Zimbabwe's currency means nothing, yet Nazi-American currency still means something? It's all about the economic numbers and who makes up those numbers, will they play along or not. I've already posted the fact that France is in fact, BROKE. And extorts from a series of Black former colonies to keep its standard of living. This is why Black African economic stability is CRITICAL. A global economic system centered specifically around Whites, allows White Countries to pick-n-choose who will be sustained and supported, even when they are TECHNICALLY BROKE AND DESTITUTE. And who won't be. This isn't me making shit up. These are actual facts. Apartheid had an immensely dehumanizing impact. But it also caused communities to forge powerful social bonds and channel anger into resistance and liberation movements.
The destructive effect of contemporary policies has led not to the creation of stronger bonds, but to the unraveling of the fabric of society. Unlike under apartheid, there is no obvious target for people’s rage. (Uhhh, yes there is. But if Black South Africans are going to play stupid and fall for the same ole tired-ass White-trap?) There are protests, almost daily, against housing conditions, police brutality and political corruption. (Because Black People want their Black Government to give them what the Whites never did and the ANC is fucking around and fucking it up. Simple as that. There is considerable anger against the ruling African National Congress, in both national and local governments. Yet the relationship of people, even of critics, to the A.N.C. is complex. It remains, for most, the party that brought about liberation, and so retains considerable moral legitimacy. (Even though he typed that and it is words, he sounds so depressed about that.)
The confusion about whom to blame for conditions that seem little improved from the days of apartheid has often led people to turn on one other. (Of course, because the Black Government is NOT BEING HONEST WITH THEM. They are talking SIDEWAYS, JUST LIKE OBAMA. To Black People, about SERIOUS SHIT! AND BLACK PEOPLE DON'T WANT SIDEWAYS BULLSHIT STATEMENTS FROM THEIR LEADERSHIP! We get that enough FROM WHITE PEOPLE!) The explosion of xenophobic violence, directed against migrant workers from other African nations, that swept through South Africa in 2008, and again this year, is one expression of this. (No, actually that is called SHITTY-LEADERSHIP BY THE ANC. By talking SIDEWAYS to Black People, just like any leadership/government, talking sideways to its people, then it ADDS TO THE CONFUSION. And the citizenry RESPOND INAPPROPRIATELY.) So is the growing conflict between apartheid-defined categories of people, like “blacks” and “coloreds.” (This is an issue that I talked about with Stacey where there is nothing to talk about. You can set your watch to the oncoming fight between Blacks and Coloureds. That's why I posted in July and told Stacey to find out what's really up with good ole Baby Dave Evans and get her ass going before that happens next. Much of what HAS HAPPENED in South Africa I talked to her about before hand. And? Eh. I can't make someone take me seriously. Doom and Gloom, as she said. Doom and Gloom. All right. New conflicts have also emerged, like the one between longtime residents of Cape Town’s townships (who call themselves “borners” — people born in the townships) and immigrants from elsewhere in South Africa. Such divisions have been exacerbated, even exploited, by sections of the A.N.C. As the failure to transform the lives of the poor has eroded support for the party, many A.N.C. politicians have turned to the politics of ethnicity and identity to strengthen their base.
It is a development that has long been evident, but that has really gathered strength under the leadership of South Africa’s current president, Jacob G. Zuma. Mr. Zuma has unashamedly exploited his Zulu identity — “100% Zulu Boy” read the slogan on supporters’ T-shirts before the 2009 general election. And to shore up his support, he has promoted supposedly traditional African values, enhancing, for example, the powers of unelected tribal chiefs.
Last year, his government attempted to pass the Traditional Courts Bill that would have created a separate legal system for millions of people living in the former Bantustans, allowing local chiefs to act as judges, prosecutors and mediators, with no legal representation and no right of appeal.
“Let us solve African problems the African way, not the white man’s way,” Mr. Zuma proclaimed in defense of the law. (Now? -_- This is where he fucked up, as far as Zuma. You can't REVERSE TIME. So if you even want to TRY THIS? Then you HAVE TO MODERNIZE IT. Exposure to certain customs and cultures and then living underneath them for x-amount of time? You're not gonna be able to just POOF! Make people forget the way they've grown up and lived regarding things like laws. Social-values and ideals, etc. These things have to be CLOSELY EXAMINED to see what impact they are having and then decided upon on whether to keep, modify, or do away with them. Then comes the task of how to implement these things so that the citizenry doesn't go into shock. Or isn't actually opposed to the changes you're trying to implement.)

The situation has been made worse by the issue that dominates South African politics today: corruption. (Is South Africa bankrupt yet?) Almost daily, there is a new scandal. (Yeah and ABOUT THAT? How much of the press is Black Owned and Controlled and Employed? Was the Press this ACTIVE during Apartheid? I'm just asking. Because that's RATHER IMPORTANT. Was the press THIS CRITICAL AND SNIFFIN AROUND UNCOVERING ALL THE CORRUPTION OF THE WHITE APARTHEID REGIMES?) Accusations reach up to the highest state office — Mr. Zuma himself has been embroiled in a long-running scandal — and threaten to besmirch the integrity of institutions like the National Prosecuting Authority.
Corruption expresses the way that state patronage has come to define politics. Politics in South Africa today “is devoid of political content,” in the words of a former A.N.C. activist, Raymond Suttner. (Now this is interesting, NOW HE DECIDES TO USE AN ACTUAL NAME, question is, WHY? Now? I've left the link ACTIVE. But this is what I mean by you have to be able to PAY ATTENTION to the speaker, typer, in this instance. But his decision to use an actual person's name, so far it has only centered around when it helps drive home his point that Blacks need to go back to White-Rule) Instead, “it relates to who is rising or falling, as part of ongoing efforts to secure positions of power and authority.” Using corrupt resources to win favors from different social groups and factions has helped entrench a dangerous cronyism in national politics. (This is true, however having these words come from him and/or this other man, doesn't exactly help either)
While sections of the political elite have tried to manipulate the politics of ethnicity to bypass democracy, many at the grass-roots level have opposed these moves. Popular opposition killed the Traditional Courts Bill. Last month, a community in the Eastern Cape won a court battle to elect its own leaders, rather than have them imposed. It cannot be right, the court agreed, that the people of the Transkei region “enjoyed greater democratic rights” under apartheid “than they do under a democratically elected government.” (Again, the attempts to keep hammering home the point that White-rule was the RIGHT RULE, meanwhile? No Whites were executed for the brutal killings of Blacks. The lack of running water, electricity, sewage, medical care, education, etc! It takes some balls to tell someone to their face that they were better off being oppressed with NO SHOT of ever gaining their own control over their lives)
It is a telling comment on the state of contemporary South Africa that the government can be chastised for being less democratic than it was under apartheid. If the future of South Africa is not to be totally bleak, it is in such struggles for democracy against the corrupt elite that hope must lie. Please note that at no point does he ever mention having talked to a single ACTUAL BLACK SOUTH AFRICAN CITIZEN. He only talked to those who held some sort of office or position of power, yet? He talks down about Blacks in power in South Africa, while his funky, White-slave ass never speaks one time to an actual Black South African on the street. That is NOT a mistake on his part.
