Ahmed Mohamed could have been 'head of a gang': teacher

Clockmaking whiz kid Ahmed Mohamed seemed just as likely to become a criminal mastermind as a master engineer, according to one of his middle school teachers.

“He was a weird little kid,” Ralph Kubiak, formerly of Sam Houston Middle School, told theDallas Morning News Saturday about Mohamed, who became an overnight celebrity afterhis arrest for bringing a homemade clock to school.

“He’s one of those that could either be CEO of a company or head of a gang,” the retired history teacher said.

Mohamed was led out of his Texas high school earlier this month after school officials confused his complex clock for a bomb — a mistake that led to national accusations of Islamophobia.

But it turns out Mohamed’s problems with authority started a long time before the crock clock crisis.

In middle school, Mohamed racked up weeks of suspensions, and once pranked a classroom by using a homemade remote control to turn off a projector, the Morning News reported. When he was sent to the principal's office, he declared his First Amendment rights.

This all started just a year after Mohamed arrived at the school knowing almost no English, his teachers recalled.

Before he even started high school, Mohamed caused so much trouble he got the Irving School District to investigate claims of anti-Muslim bullying from students and staff members. Mohamed said classmates called him “ISIS boy” and “bacon boy,” and teachers unfairly punished him and told him he couldn’t pray in school.

He also invented several contraptions that resembled the wiry mess of his infamous clock — and brought them to school without a problem.

Mohamed’s disciplinary record, and the results of his complaints, are confidential. But peers and former teachers said some of the incidents were blown out of proportion.

A family friend, Anthony Bond, said one early suspension came from Mohamed blowing soap bubbles in a bathroom with a cousin,

“Kids are kids,” Bond said. “He was a little boy in a new environment, and they were acting out.”

In another instance, Bond said he had to write a letter to the district defending Mohamed after he was suspended for defending himself in a hallway fight. That suspension was overturned.

Mohamed has now left the school district entirely, while continuing his tour-by-invite to high-profile spots nationwide, including the White House.

He came to New York City this week, speaking at the Social Good Summit Sunday and dropping by City Hall Monday.

There, he received a city proclamation honoring his tech work and calling him "a role model for young people who want to pursue careers in math, science and engineering, and improve the world for future generations."
