Dr Boyce Watkins - Yes, Black People can do whatever White People do

Hello everyone, I hope you're day has been amazing.

I wanted to share some insights from a conversation I recently had with Tariq Nasheed, creator of the extraordinarily popular film series, Hidden Colors.

Tariq came to my house to film my segment of his new film, "Hidden Colors 4."  During the filming session, I spoke to Tariq about his business model, how he built his company and other interesting topics. 

One part of the conversation I'll never forget is when Tariq told me that he often speaks with people who truly believe that he could never have created such a successful project without being financially backed by a white man. 

I want you to take a second and think about his insulting this is: There are some people, many of them black, who TRULY BELIEVE that a black person can't even create a film that makes several million dollars on its own.   This is odd, since whites often produce films that gross over $100 million dollars at the box office. 

This conversation spoke to the degree to which people feel that African Americans are economically and intellectually handicapped.  I am personally offended by the notion that we are incapable of doing any and everything that a white man can do.   

This is nonsense. 

The truth of the matter is that in the next one or two generations, we're going to build a black Hollywood, and within the next few decades, our children and grandchildren will be able to release films that gross over $100 million dollars before they are done. 

So, the independent success of Tariq Nasheed isn't the end of anything, it's just the beginning of something greater.  Nasheed's films show that there is a massive market for thoughtful, progressive films within the black community that don't involve the leaning on excessive stereotypes or coonery in order to be successful.
